It’s here! Plastic Beach! Bruce Willis! Stylo!
Why is Bruce Willis trying to kill the Gorillaz? How much did this video cost? What the hell is that smokey thing with the funny nose? Is Jamie Hewlett completely off his nutter? I haven’t a clue, but I approve.
Earlier this morning, the wonderful people over at Gorillaz-Unofficial were kind enough to post scans of the new artwork for the deluxe edition of Plastic Beach. It was so pretty, I felt inclined to share. My initial verdict of the album as a whole? Pretty much amazing. If you haven’t heard it yet, you can listen to a stream of the album, courtesy of NPR, here.

I love the artwork for this phase. It reminds me of the stuff Jamie did for Monkey Journey To The West, there’s a lot more “depth” to the characters this time around. My favorite is the one with Noodle sitting on Russel’s head.
Also, the inside of the booklet with the scrawly lyrics reminds me of the inside of Parklife’s insert, with Damon’s scribblings.
I agree. It’s definitely seems a lot more involved than the previous phases. I think I particularly like Plastic Beach because, in addition to Damon getting more comfortable with the musical concepts, Jamie also seems to be getting a bit more confident/edgy about his character designs. For instance, doesn’t it seem like the ‘Stylo’ video is really the 19-2000 video, but on steroids? Or is that just me?
I am so stoked on Bruce Willis appearing in a Gorillaz video. Heather, you always find the crazy-coolest shit.
Aww, thanks. :3 That’s what I get for noodling ’round on the internets instead of doing proper things.
I am strangely impressed by Plastic Beach. I had so many doubts. Shame on me for doubting.
wow? how did you get the artwork early? it was under lock and key from what i know!
I think that the storyline behind it all is getting too farfetch’d making the story not so much about the band but more about each indivual character.
As, for instance every image with russel shows him annoyed & there is no consistent noodle character. Most of the time the noodle shown is a robot.
I think if the band are to go in this direction then each and every character should have a short album to themselves. Murdocs beeing metal, russels being rap etc. This would definately be a good step forward.
