Music Monday: Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks

While I usually don’t feel inspired to post more than just a tweet about #MusicMonday, I guess today is an exception. I’m not going to lie, the majority of the reason I feel inspired to post is due to Pitchfork’s announcement of Beck‘s soon-to-be-revealed collaboration with Pavement/Silver Jews singer/guitarist Stephen Malkmus, all of which is probably more than enough excitement than I need on a dreary Monday.

So, taking into account all of that 90′s indie-rock nostalgia, I’ve decided to travel back in time and spotlight one of my favorite tracks from Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks called ’1% Of One’. Originally released on Pig Lib in 2003, it’s probably one of my more favorite post-Pavement solo efforts. And even though at nine-minutes long it can certainly seem intimidating, rest assured that it is still definitely worth a full listen.

Video: The Fall: “Bury Pts. 1 + 3″

Mark E. Smith is one strange, strange looking dude. The first time I saw his picture on the cover of Slug Magazine back in 2005, just before the release of Fall Heads Roll, my first impression was that in addition to making amazingly bizarre, catchy post-punk tunes, Smith also had immense talent for looking like a baby lizard. Having put that out there, the intriguing slow-motion video for their newest release, ‘Bury Pts. 1 + 3′, probably does that first impression more justice than words ever could.

Friday Five: Five Songs For The Weekend

Funny how quickly one can go from blistering 90 degree Californian weather to snow in such a small amount of time. It’s been a long trip back to the RUBBISH space — Coachella, finals, sickness, snowstorms, and moves into the big city — but we made it. We survived. And in order to celebrate, we’ve brought you yet another tasty Friday Five, fresh from the vacuous void where our functioning pre-finals brains used to be. Enjoy.

Magnet & Gemma Hayes: Lay Lady Lay (Bob Dylan Cover)

It’s funny how things have a tendency to come back to you when you least expect it. A few years ago, during a period when I made a point to pick up any and all free new artist mix tapes in my local record store’s trash disposal, I came across a rather interesting Filter Magazine “Music For Films” compilation. One of the more imaginative tracks out of the bunch was a song called  ‘Hold On’ by Magnet.

At the time, I told myself to make a note to check out more of Norwegian songwriter Even Johansen’s back catalog. I never did end up checking him out though, and as a consequence overlooked his rather magnificent cover with of Bob Dylan’s ‘Lay Lady Lay’ with Irish singer-songwriter Gemma Hayes.

Cults: ‘Go Outside’

There isn’t much to be said about New York guy/gal duo Cults, other than, well, that. Both Pitchfork and NME seem equally bamboozled by the lack of information available about the mysterious couple, whose 7″ release on their BandCamp website has been making some fairly notable blog waves for the last few weeks. That minimal amount of information being said, whoever they are, whatever they are…we really really like Cults.
